At the risk of sounding bigoted it sounds like clicks and whistles to me. I never can hear any distinct sounds in Asian languages. I know they are there, my ears and brain just aren't trained to recognize them.
i posted it as a silly nothingness, just to let folks answer however they'd like to, but I admit that I wasn't thinking of it in terms of the language. You surprised me.
I used to be quite fluent 40 some years ago but all I remember now is some slang and cuss words. I thought the mainstream Vietnamese people were an extremely hard working people and during the years I was there, they were great people. They just didn't care much for us disrupting their lives. I wouldn't mind going back there now to see how it's changed. There are some Hmong near here and I have visited them several times. Wonderful people.

Rooster, off hand I don't have their name or number but I do know there are several "Touring Companies" that will get you to Vietnam for a walk down memory lane. If you go to the capital be prepared for their war museum. It is obviously one sided and all anti US. They have US equipment, lots of it, (captured by their soldiers etc). As you said the mainstream people I encountered were totally out of the picture as far as they were concerned. It was a political war in their minds between the North and the US. Now to survive most would take a side if it meant food on the table.

My oncologist is Vietnamese. His name is Viet Do and, in my opinion, he is like God.
Why? Because, although I've been going to his clinic since 2010 (first, four times a week, then once or twice a year) I have always been treated by his associates and have never yet seen the man. I believe he exists, as religious people believe God exists, and he certainly works his share of miracles.
