Inappropriate clothing for interviews

Does anyone else find it absurd people show up for job interviews in blue jeans and t-shirts? I have always worn a suit and tie, or a dress shirt, slacks, and tie. If I was an interviewer someone who came in jeans wouldn't give me a great first impression.

  • One of my sons applied for a barman's job at a leading Sydney club. He turned up in his black-and-whites. They hired him.

Basically, I think clothing needs to be appropriate to the position applied for.

I wear dress clothes. Slacks and a nice blouse.
    Never jeans.
I have never not got the job.

It depends upon both the job one is applying for and the employer.  A good rule of thumb is to dress one step up from what the position you are applying for requires on the job.

That said, as someone who employed laborers, I was less concerned about dress than attitude.  One day I had just let two guys go who had dressed well and talked a good game on the interview, I called a community center downtown to post a notice as I needed help the next morning.  I got a call within an hour, I asked if he could come for an interview and he said he was on his way.  He showed up in blue jeans, a t-shirt and tennis shoes.  When I asked if he could be there at 7 AM, he assured me he could.  He was right on time the next day, but I noticed he had walked.  I gave him a ride home (despite his insistence he could walk) and he lived a good 6-7 miles away.  He was one of the best workers I ever had.

I worked for a department store. I was one of the people that applications were turned into, before they went to management. If people came in wearing jeans their application went straight into the "circular file". (aka trash can) There was one woman who actually showed up in a tube top, cut off shorts and flip flops. If she was 16, you might think she didn't know better. However she was probably in her late 30s and her beer belly really didn't help. I was waiting for her to walk out the door before I threw it in the trash. While waiting I read it over. OMG!!!! It was barely filled out. What was on there was barely legible.

Better than a plastic trash bag!

When I first saw your question I seriously thought that's what it was going to be about! I was taught to not wear jeans, but I do think that things have changed. Considering some of the other clothing people wear in public, I guess jeans probably aren't that bad.

Something should go over a thong. If nothing else carry a towel.

Generally speaking, one should dress for a job interview wearing the same or closely similar garb that the job requires, and/or one step above it. What I mean by that last part is that if it's an office setting and dress shirts with neckties are worn every day, a full business suit is what to wear to the interview.

If someone is applying to work the front counter at a surfboard rental shop or the concession stand for a summer concert, jeans and tee-shirts might be wholly appropriate.
