We wear uniforms, follow orders, carry guns, kill the enemy if they don't kill us first. Yet we're told "we are not at war". What are we at?

We are in foreign lands. We are criticized for calling it "war". What would YOU call it and why?

    We're talking about a legal distinction here..  "At war", would be when the congress actually DECLARED a war..  But, nobody is saying that we're not fighting real wars.

    An Answermugger roundly chastized me for saying we were at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. I'm serious. That's why I asked the question excon. What difference does it make WHAT you call it if our guys  die and kill in foreign countries? Seems like war to me. Thank you for your reply! :)

    Who is criticizing?  Everyone calls it war.  Politicians and the media call it war.  As ex stated, it is a legal distinction only.

    Gotcha.  Well, if a government has troops fighting, regardless of any legal definition, it is indeed "war".
