    A wee caveat here,:

    When I was a kid we were taught in school that lead and mercury were harmless because they too are not chemically active.

    And it is even true,
    But biochemistry will find a way.

    Today we all know that lead killed the Roman empire, and that lots of medieval acymists died of quicksilver poisoning.

    LOL.  Thanks Jakob, I really do appreciate the warning.  Don't worry.  I'm not about to buy any or buy into the idea that it isn't toxic.  I was merely answering Element's question. ;-)

    The vapors of Mercury are harmful, Handling it isn't. Al of its compounds are hazardous.
    The Romans used lead acetate to sweeten their wine. Also their plumbing was lead, creating other compounds that are hazardous. Plumbers got their name from Plumbum...which was the ancient word for lead.
