Is it ok to request a set schedule?

I'm in child care as nanny, and while the mom I help is kind and I really love her kid, my schedule is never consistent..she said in beginning "sometimes" she may come home a bit late. I said ok, but lately it has been once a week or sometimes more. I always just say no problem, but is it ok to request a specific schedule? I know sometimes she works late I just don't know if she can choose that or the boss makes her... I have obligations after and I have had to cancel sometimes. On occasional weekend shift, still late as well, sometimes an hour :/  I am unsure how to say anything , as I'm shy and don't like confrontation.. I don't want to seem bossy ... :/ any tips  welcome

Based solely on your description of events, it appears that the parameters were laid out to you in the beginning, and your requesting a change now is impractical due to its unfairness to her. I believe it's time for you to sever the arrangement with her and seek different employment that better suits you.

she said 'sometimes' late, she is now always late.. so I'm not sure how it is unfair to her lol... I stay later all the time and sometimes am not paid for extra 15 mins here, extra 20 there... I do question saying anything though like you said, b/c I had agreed to stay late... but sometimes.. not every week :/ Thank you R

You continue to ask the same question and you've received some good suggestions on what you can do in that situation.

Nope, def. not trash bag , but ty... sometimes ppl are indecisive, and even ask something twice here at different times for various answers... I wish I were more assertive w/ a boss; but it is tricky they could just say, 'sorry if you can't comply... etc.'

  • Hi BB .. regarding your last line.. that's very true ... There's always a risk and it must be considered and weighed .. On one hand you have your own standards and self respect and how you expect to be treated fairly, the other hand weights up how much you need this particular employer ... Only you can make that decision ... Good luck

If being shy isn't paying off for you, maybe the time has come . . .

You may want to look back, because I believe there were numerous people that gave you suggestions.

The point is, you're too "shy" to approach your boss, it wouldn't matter if you'd gotten 100 suggestions.

You need to make a decision. If this is a deal breaker for you, say SOMETHING to her. If it isn't, then suck it up and accept that she will always take advantage of you. Why?  Because YOU allow it.
