Some Americans ARROGANTLY want Americans to speak English only. Because they are unable to learn another language themselves they don't want another language spoken in "their" country. Well it isn't "their" country only. It belongs to those who are bi-lingual and tri-lingual and multi-lingual as well. Why do their limitations have to limit the politicians who serve them?
No. We have enough money to hire interpreters that are just excellent. You see, we are lucky if we find people to vote for that can even understand English. According to what has passed through Trump's lips, that has not been proven. Or Bush. Or .... you get the idea.
We have people. They are called Interpreters. They go to college for it. You can pay them a couple hundred bucks an hour and VOILA! They are good at deciphering even Swahili if the need arose.
No, not particularly. We speak English here, and I am among those who say if you want to be here, learn English.
If someone is actually qualified to be Vice President, which is only one heartbeat away from being President, and actually wants the job, and happens to be bilingual then yes it would make sense to have a bilingual Vice President.
The only possible candidate out there who could possibly fit those criteria would be Jeb Bush.
So, you still so keen on there being a bilingual Vice President?
Excellent question.
Yes, it is sad that some Americans choose to be ignorant when it comes to learning other languages.
You are wrong. Most politicians in other countries are bilingual and some even speak more than three languages,
An American politician is no better than the other ones. If he is to represent the country he should have knowledge of other languages and cultures.
Ignorance is not as widely accepted elsewhere as it is in the USA.
Do you see what I have to put up with 24/7 Uc? Do you feel my pain? Americans by and large celebrate their ignorance of languages, other countries, other cultures. They figger there is no one better than them so they don't have to do anything. They can be as dumb as a brick wall and the fact they are Americans forgives all. It is personally very embarrassing to me but it is what it is. They take joy in mediocrity and averageness and ignorance and are very suspicious of intelligence and talent. Why that is I don't know but the responses I get from those who are not American are in general far more substantive/informative/thoughtful than what I get from the general American public. I KNOW the difference. They don't. Not all of them of course. There are SOME Americans who are engaged and informed and astute and don't fear smart people. I dunno know though. It is getting worse. With a Donald Trump as the be all and end all for 13 million American people my voice is not being heard. They are so happy with him. They know not what they do. Thank you for your reply and for being here. You help offset those who don't have a clue and are proud of it! :(

Thank you for your reply Step. Different strokes.
I agree. They don't think they need to be anyting but American you see. That cancels out any inadequacies or weaknesses. That is enough . Oy vey! :( Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate it.

I completely disagree with thee. Thank you for your reply Sharonna,
Thank you for your comment, Rosie , I appreciate. You are absolutely right.
And BTW, I do feel your pain.

To give you an example of the extremes some ( thankfully not all ) Americans go to when it comes to arrogance regarding other cultures, a lady in New Jersey once told me how annoyed she was when she visited Spain and found out the road signs were not in English and that they didn´t accept her dollars at the shops !!!!!!!!!!!

AARRGGHH! It used to be just be the Ugly American. Add to that the Stupid American. It embarrasses me but I have no control over any of it. If I did things would be different! Thank you for your reply Uc! :)
((hugs)) Merci, gracias, mahalo, danke schoen, thanks and shat shunuryagalyem Uc
. The last one is phonetic Armenian for "thank you". :)
You've hit a new low with this one, LOL.....When they rewrite the Constitution in Spanish, Get back to me !
Anytime.
No, Rosie has not. But you certainly have. No surprise there.
Gee....That is so hurtful..
Under, no I'm correct. People might know seven languages but in America we speak English and all official correspondence and government business should be in English only. The message is if you want to be here to live, learn English.
Your comment about politicians is silly. Purely. Sounds like a third grader. You have a lot of good company here.
Ironically, people call Americans "arrogant" when they visit other countries looking for English speakers yet THEY want to emigrate and change the language here. This is a land of immigrants, basically, and the one common language of the Constitution, established government and business has been English so that everyone can communicate here. Other languages have recently been accommodated so that new immigrants can get along here. But whose language? It's much easier for people choosing to live here to learn English than for everyone whose families have been here for the last couple of hundred years to learn the languages of ALL the immigrant groups. And if that sounds "arrogant" or "ignorant" guess what ? As someone who IS multi-lingual, I don't really care ! It's a benefit to know more than one language but it's never been a necessity here.
Immigrants come to OUR country to live.. we shouldn't have to conform to them being as they made a choice to come here. If I went to Mexico or France or anywhere else to live... you bet I'd be forced to learn Spanish or some other language, their not going to have signs all over in English especially in the non-tourist towns so why should it be different here?

Kind of ironic that the prez. won't be bilingual but to work in a Gov. job, Fed. or State, city, if your not bilingual good luck landing that job. If you walk into a DMV in So. Cal. you'll find about an 80% Mexican work force. Same goes for other Gov. jobs, Social Services, etc.
