He's being stupid. Cell phones are affordable but health insurance isn't affordable unless your employer provides it! He has got to be kidding! People would need to give up a lot more than a cellphone to afford health insurance on their own!
A cell phone is affordable because there is competition. Due to competition, I got an LG V10 with Verizon that costed around $650 at the time for $200 due to competing plans and promotions with other providers. Send health insuance back to the free market and create competition across state lines throughout the country and monthly premiums will also drop. This way, Americans can afford their favorite tech alongside of their health insurance, but more importantly, they can actually afford their health insurance.
