I used to go running or walking every lunch time. On the way from the office I passed a gym where people ran or walked on treadmills. I was forced to run around the Sydney Harbour foreshore where I had to endure wind and sun and put up with the smell of salt water. I think I was the crazy one.
Too many new and strange diseases going around. Sitting in someone else's sweat is not appealing to me. Nor swimming in their dirt and pee. Zumba is the only ok thing to do at a gym for me. Due to an injury, I am unable to do Zumba at all right now.
No. Depends on the gym i suppose. I am an overweight middle aged woman who did feel uncomfortable at one of two local gyms but then Planet Fitness opened a gym in our town and its awesome! Its a majority overweight normal people, very affordable and bright and cheerful. That gym is for anyone. I actually like going there.

But consider what people do at a gym. One lifts heavy objects and sets them down. Then lifts them again. Then sets them down. Repeatedly! and for no compensation. Then one gets on a treadmill runs and runs getting nowhere. Isn't life already like this? After this one complains about how sore one is. And one pays to do these things! Finally one is surrendering to specious, culturally imposed ideas about body size.
Plus consider the disadvantages of the "great outdoors". Mosquitos, gnats, dog piles, rabid squirrels, tripping over a tree root. So, is the outdoors so "great"?
Maybe for some of the people that compete professionally, but for the regular person, it's the best move you could ever make to look and feel better physically. The issue I have with gyms is that there are way too many people around me while I exercise. I'd rather do all of that at home. I'd have all the privacy I'd ever need, but that's just me.
Consider this. One goes to the gym and picks up a heavy object then sets it down. This is repeated till one is in pain. This is done not only without compensation but one pays a gym fee to engage in this self abuse! God's blood! This is insanity! Or one runs and runs on a tread mill. Running and running going nowhere. Most of us already do that 40 hours a week, but at least there is some compensation.
Self-abuse? Only if you're juicing up. Change often involves a little pain, but what you gain is a body that's healthy than the one you had before a person that start his/her journey. Your mind also changes to be more confident. Although some people change into arseholes.
