As a rule of thumb it's not a bad idea. But remember that history's great achievers have had big egos. They have the confidence in themselves to stand alone and push their ideas or their accomplishments when the rest of us would stand back and say, "Don't be silly, Orville: that thing will never fly."
Paracelsus was one of the people who helped make the transition from alchemy to modern pharmacy but was so obnoxious that he added a word to the language. His name was Theophrastus Bombastus Aureolus ab Hohenheim but he considered himself a better healer than the fabled Celsus and took the name Paracelsus to emphasise that. His personality was such that his second name found its way into the English language. To be bombastic is to be like Paracelsus.
Ego ain't so bad. It's misplaced ego that causes the disdain.
thinking that you're better than other people and more important etc. and giving off that attitude.

Ego is leading our life as per the thinking that our existence is limited to our 5 senses, mind, and intellect and identifying with them to various degrees. The following is a drawing based on subtle-knowledge of a person with ego. It has been drawn by a seeker of SSRF with highly advanced sixth sense, extrasensory perception or ESP and it helps us to understand the spiritual meaning of ego. The dark covering seen around the Soul is the ego of the person. As the ego of this person is high he does not identify with the Soul. Due to the ego a covering of black energy has collected around him. Also when one’s ego is high the flow of grace from God is blocked. As a result of the black energy covering coupled with the block in access to Divine grace, the person’s life is impacted negatively.
