Is it considered unpatriotic in the States not to like Country music?

And before anyone gets mad, it isn't meant to be provocative. I am a huge fan, since I was 8 but most of my American friends don't like it.

  • OK Ok...I'm busted. I do like some of the OLD country, Willie, Waylon, Merle....even Loretta Lynn and Dolly. I still prefer my classic rock over everything else though. :0)
Being from Nashville, country music was never my thing. There are a LOT of us here who do not like it. We also don't like tourists who dress funny. No one from here wears dresses or shorts with cowboy boots. We don't wear cowboy hats either.

Not really. It's more of a Southern and Midwest thing than the whole of the country thing. And even a lot of people from those areas will listen to other kinds of music over country. Elvis Presley was a legit Southern person, but his music is considered rock and roll. He was managed by Sam Phillips of Sun Records...the same place and label as Johnny Cash, one of the biggest country stars ever. And even Cash's music isn't very country, IMO. The real godfather of country music is Hank Williams Sr. His time was the 40's. The original. It doesn't get more country than him.

  • Hi DDB,
Most places I have been in the US, you never even hear country music!
I myself do like it, and here are two favourites: Don Williams singing AMANDA, and poor little old ugly Jessi Colter (in the words of her husband, Waylon Jennings) with I'M NOT LISA.

I'm judgemental when it comes to music.

When I see someone listening to country, my stomach roils.   I don't HATE all country, but the idea of playing that crap and enjoying it speaks volumes.   UGH.  No taste and probably a Trump fan.

I do not hate country.  I want everyone to know this.  There is a lot of great country music.  It's just not played on most stations.  The lovely people who play country stations all day and night are Trump voters.

I love Johnny Cash.  I love Willie Nelson.  I love country flavor.  I hate those 10 TEN people of the last 30 decades.

Why do you have intense hostility and aversion (definition of hate) toward Trump supporters? Did known Trump supporters do something to you? This post was edited by catch224U at March 25, 2017 10:58 AM MDT

No, I don't think so. There are people that only like certain kinds of music, then there are people like me that appreciate good music no matter the style. I don't like to be boxed in concerning music.

  • for this to concern one, one would first have to be concerned with seeming unpatriotic.

  • Unpatriotic?  "I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that."  Country music has evolved over time and is quite different now than it was in the days of Bob Wills and the Sons of the Pioneers. Most music, that people called Country, was something that I listened to until Garth Brooks came into the genre and after that I became more selective.

It might be a bit of a surprise to learn that many performers of country music are from East Europe and South Africa. After that, it's no surprise at all to learn that jitterbug champions might be from Belgium. Or Australia.
