Ahh cool then you know exactly what I mean... when we were kids we were told to stick to the left weren't we... now people seem to walk willynilly wherever they feel like it.. getting in our way
Ahh well here in the UK we do drive on the left and it was always the case that people kept to the left, for example when going up staircases etc... and everyone knew where they were and it all worked fine.. but nowdays I don't see any keep to the left signs and there's frequent chaos on stairs etc in public places... it's a very minor bug bear of mine we should all keep to the left, or right depending on our culture etc...
On a railway station in Jutland I saw a good solution to that. At the top and bottom of the stairs there was push-to-open doors. Only the door on the right as you entered the stairwell was the one you could push from outside to get in. The door on the left could only be pushed from inside the stairwell ;-)) A simple and discreete way to make people keep to the right side.

There's a similar system aboard US Navy ships: to facilitate the steady flow of movement from one deck to another, the stairways (known as ladders in maritime terminology) on one side of the vessel are designated only for going up and on the other side of the ship only for going down. That way, especially during general quarters, during any type of emergency, during any type of high-stress situation such as combat, an onboard fire, high winds/heavy seas, storms, etc, there's less confusion and a lower probability of people running into each other. ~
I was taught to walk, bike, and drive on the right. I was also taught that the man walks on the left of the women ... to place him between her and traffic.
What are you talking about? People don't always walk on the rigot side in public. And what kind of Gestapo boarding school did you attend? ~

Actually we were told to walk on the left and drive on the right. The reasoning was that walking on the left we would see traffic coming at us. And have a chance of jumping out of the way.
Today we have elaborate sidewalks with curbs and all sorts of stuff. so it has pretty much become a moot point.
