They kind of went the way that CRT TVs went. We drove through a pay booth,usually with the beer hidden in the trunk. You the drove to a spot with a pole and a speaker, attached it to your window, and watched on an outdoor screen and drank beer. If you saw the movie "Twister", they showed one getting blown away.
"No" ... the closest one was in Culver City. A few miles away The Studio Drive-In opened August 26, 1948 and was independently operated. It was taken over by Pacific Theatres in April 1952. Closed in 1993, it was demolished in September 1998.
