How did Leonardo da Vinci measure small measurements, like inches, cm, mm?

Did he have rulers like we have today? Was the metric system around during that time? I did find he used an English system, but it was for larger measurements.

I'm sure there was a measuring system in place back then, but if not, ol' Leo was so prolific that he probably would have invented it.

@Randy, of course, you are right. I just wanted to see what he used. I know he measured every inch of the body mathematically. An inch was probably the distance from the tip of the thumb to where it bends. Thanks!
