At what age do you think a child should get an allowance? How much should it be?

I think allowances should be earned.  I was never successful with the allowance thing with my kids anyway.  We would all forget about it.  They could do and have what I could afford.  By not giving them a continuing stream of cash it is easier to know what they are doing.   It's surprising to me that young children have so much cash in their pocket during a regular school day.  Mine didn't.
