I did them another way when I was in school. My way was a lot easier! Unfortunately the teacher gave us a test on it so I was up late at night before the test trying to actually learn how to do it.
No, I have never found it to be a useful tool in my adult life. And, no employer has ever asked to see my high school diploma either. I could have played hooky for four years!
I commented recently that diagramming sentences was a useless and stressful thing for me. I can remember being called to the board to diagram a sentence. Subject and verb and I wanted to be done. :)
Oh, it is usefull enough. It is just that the English language is so loose that any proper structuring is impossible if you dont include the context dependent meaning as part of it. One of my favorites: "Antique Commode for sale from elderly lady with loose drawers and rococo legs.
I don't think you are talking about diagramming. Your example is an improperly structured sentence. We all have been entertained at the expense of those who make these mistakes. All through life we must be able to communicate and speak/write through properly structured sentences. All through my life I have never needed to diagram a sentence after elementary school. :)
