Do you need to be the best/smartest/best-looking in your group? What do you use as a basis to choose friends? Why?

Do you prefer to do all the talking and have others listen to you or are you a very good listener too? How much attention do you need from them and are you willing to give the same amount of attention to them?

I listen to what they talk about and how they treat people. Food service people in particular.

I think that is an excellent point Zack. How you treat people...particularly waiters/waitresses/cashiers/store employees...says a lot about  how you perceive yourself and others. if you talk down to or are rude to those whom you consider to be "beneath" you then you're really not worth spending time with  in my opinion. People with superiority complexes do not make good friends. They embarrass  you and annoy you. Not friend material. Thank you  for your reply and Happy Sunday. You know more than once I have apologized to cashiers for the rude behavior of a customer who  treated them like crap. I suppose if I were braver I would have confronted the rude person. SIGH. :).
