This is a really hard one to answer. I have been both and it is definitely more pleasant to be 'the leader' and having others follow my lead, but it also erodes you slightly but steadily so you more and more loose the ability to accept and consider criticism.

Okay, I don't do either. I don't lead 'cause I have no idea where I'm going or if I'll ever get there, and I don't follow, cause I'm an individual who likes her freedom and independence. (generally speaking, I do follow more than lead, I think.)

To answer your question, though, I would love to see most people dabbling in both, every now and then, but they don't. Most people follow, and they have to, cause thinking for yourself ain't easy, and they find it's safer to follow then it is to lead.. people think there's someone who has their best interests at heart, and who will get them where they wanna get to. It's easier than thinking, over-analyzing, and weighing things in your head.

you said no middle answers, but I'm sorry.. sometimes the only truth lies in the grey areas.. and you have to follow my reasoning and accept that, Jaimie. :)

LOL oh you are so going to hate my answer.. another realist and middle grounder here :P  My personal experience is that I can do both.. I am naturally a follower.. I prefer to be in the background.. just copying everyone else and doing the least necessary to get by. However, what's weird and unique about me is that if there is no one willing to lead, or if it's necessary for me to lead - if something needs doing.. then I WILL lead.. and I do it well.. it just doesn't naturally sit with me unless I have no choice..

  • I ran my own shop for many years so I had to be a leader all the time. Even though I got down and worked with my people, I was still their leader. They respected me and that's all I asked.
Many years ago I was a Sergeant and squad leader so I had to lead my men. Plus try my best to keep them alive.
Doesn't make me a born leader and I followed others at times also but not much.

Lead.  If you're not the lead dog, the scenery never changes.

Then there is no answer.  It cannot be answered that way.   It is not black or white.  Not even Vanna White.  There is more than one instance that  we
are speaking of.  There are billions of instances that we are speaking of where it may be good to do one versus the other.

    The question is moot.
