UNDER OATH he says "I do not recall" or "I don't remember". How do you PROVE it one way or the other?

If he does recall/remember then he is a liar. If he doesn't recall/remember then all he is guilty of is having a faulty memory. Will every liar get off by saying "I do not recall. I don't remember"? If so what is the point of being under oath if there is no way to prove whether a person is a liar or has a bad memory?

I'd be concerned about someone who has such a poor memory and holds such a high office.

That is really scary though Spunky. I mean there are things that really happened that I honestly do not remember having happened so if I were under oath I'd swear to it that they never did. But that wouldn't mean they didn't happen. All it would mean was I forgot or didn't pay enough attention at the time. So every liar can use that ruse and not be held accountable? Oy vey.  Something else to worry about! Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :) One of the side effects of having chemo may be loss of memory. So in 2008 when I went through it I was told about it but I didn't think anything about it. Subsequently things would come up and I'd get into an argument with Jim or my sis insisting it never happened. But it did! So I'm not unique. Maybe everyone has those very same experiences for whatever reason. How can truth be determined if so much of it relies on faulty memory? Thank you for your reply! :)

It is scary.  At least with most of us not recalling certain things, it doesn't affect the entire country.  I'm sure there are things that I don't remember either, but I think if I met with a head of Russia, I would recall that!  Happy Thursday. :)

  • Sounds like Reagan. He did a lot of forgetting.

I think that may have been due to early onset Alzheimer's WC. I think Reagan might have been suffering from it long before he knew and acknowledged it. It's a condition that afflicts far too many and we certainly can't fault anyone who has it for that. Thank you for your reply.

  • I am very well aware of what it is and what it does. My mother-in-law had it.

Condolences. That must have been very hard on the family. Happy Friday to thee WC. You did not mention Alzheimer's in your reply about Reagan. Since you are "very well aware of what it is and what it does" I think your sharing that would have been a natural.

  • I did not realize a personal anecdote was required when giving an answer. Duly noted, I will keep that in mind for future reference if I answer any more of your questions. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at June 16, 2017 7:00 AM MDT

  •   No it couldn't be proven.  Such a claim is a sort of evasion or escape clause.  It is a tactic we are all given to use it uncomfortable situations.

Could you do me a favor please whistle? Would you read my reply to Spunky? It isn't always evasion or an escape clause. I really am worried about this issue because  I have experienced it personally firsthand. Not recalling/remembering something that happened and arguing about it with people being absolutely certain I was right. I wasn't. I was wrong! :( Oy vey. I sure hope I'm never in that predicament! :(

  • I have read it and agree.  This is why people of power are held to a greater degree of accountability than others, their blunders have a greater effect than the average person's.
