Back in the 50's, I was scared of the flying monkey things on 'The Wizard of Oz'.

Ding! Ding! Ding!  Me too!  I was also afraid of the trees throwing apples back at me.
I was more afraid of the flying monkeys and the trees than the lady on the bike who turned into  the wicked witch!

I was never into movies that much, but I can safely say that the giant baby episode of Rugrats was the scariest thing ever.

The entire tornado scene here in 1939's "The Wizard of OZ"

UPDATE: I just watched it again here - - it STILL scares me!! I' m scared for everyone and the animals -- everything scares me about it still -- how cool! It's all of the scene basically up to the point where Dorothy gets hit on the head in the house that scares me; the rest, as a kid, I knew was a dream or something as the characters flew by the window. But from the beginning of this scene/video clip until the 2:30 minute mark -- frightening to me!!!

I think the actual book was even more disturbing.  I did not read it.  I am sorry I have not gotten to it.

Hi Shar, Since I was able to read and actually understand what I was reading (not to say picture books aren't as appealing but to stay on track here...;)) the cool thing about the journey you take is all the characters and how you perceive they look.  Sometimes when somebody takes that from you by making the visual in a movie, the book looses the intimacy it has with you.
For example, my mom is a huge J.R.R. Tolkien fan.  She reads the trilogy every other summer.  She's done this since I was born.  She must know them word for word by now.  She's 73 years old. :)  BUT, to this day, she will not sit and watch the movies.  Even after I've told her the animation is phenomenal and Smaug is beautifully done, she won't.
It's the same thing.  I never read The Wizard of Oz, but even if I did now, I would still see Judy Garland as Dorothy.  Big smiles! I agree with you :)
