  • It is hard to know which to cite.  Some which annoy me the most:  "Just sayin'."  "First world problem."  "Been there, done that."  And possibly the most stupid, "That's what he said."

    Unlike another answer, I find much helpful truth in "It is what it is." For someone -- me --  who daily keeps battling inner voices that create, at times, irrational and illogical conclusions from situations and then worries about them -- (anxiety disorder) - - to repeat to myself "It is what it is" reminds me to literally take a situation for only and exactly what it is - - to quit adding stupid fears to situations which most often are quite OK to deal with.

    "It is what it is" is a helpful managing tool for me - - and I'm very surprised at the number of people who get seemingly insanely uptight when the phrase is used.


    UPDATE: A half-hour later from posting my answer, I just now realized my answer does not answer your question. Oh, well -- it is what it is.

    At times, I still try to wrap my head around that one, too. I see its point but I'd also like to think we all could become stronger without having to approach death or deathly circumstances. (But I know the phrase means probably only ' getting through difficult circumstances can sometimes make us stronger.' Yet, I know sometimes even getting through difficult circumstances can weaken, not strengthen, someone.)
    Golly, I'm spouting out huge monologues now -- you said it all much better than I did and in only one sentence.

    I hear you, I really do! I've experienced really tough situations that have definitely made me stronger, but have also experienced the opposite.  In general it's just one of those annoying things that people say to try to make you feel better when they don't know what else to say... and what probably would actually make you feel better is giving that person a slap!

    It's more of a truism than a cliché but I have a family member who always says  "It's always in the last place you look" after finding something she had a hard time finding.

    Umm, yes, I guess it's never going to be in the second last place you look or the third last place you look because most people wouldn't keep looking for it if they already found it.
