    My association with the word "melon" has always been a reference to someone's head---perhaps from comic books before I willingly ate fruits.

    Today, I usually write cantaloupe, honey dew, etc., when I shop.

    Nope.  They were not funny.  It must have been something that was a reflection of the times and what was funny on film back then. I think they are totally stupid.
