Mayo is egg and olive oil.

Margarine is basically solidified palm oil

I do not want margarine on anything.  I want butter.  I don't want butter in potato salad I want mayonaisse.

I don't want mayonaisse on my pancakes, I want butter.

    Amen.

  • Mayonnaise is an acceptable substitute ONLY if you are making grilled cheese sandwiches. Spread a little mayo on the bread instead of butter, grill/fry as usual and enjoy. :)

Yes, my son puts mayo on the bread when he makes grilled cheese sandwiches and they are delicious.
If you are baking something that calls for eggs and you don't have any you can use mayo as a substitute and it works out very good.
