I substitute minced kangaroo for ground beef frequently. Lower in fat, just as high in iron and no cholesterol whatsoever - marsupial metabolism doesn't require it so they don't produce any. The meat is darker and denser than beef, so roo steak has to be cooked slow - but that problem doesn't arise with mince. I didn't think that you, as an American, would have had the opportunity to sample it unless you've been to Australia, so that part of it was a rhetorical question - but it's good food and better for you than any other red meat.
Thank you for the education Sbf. It is kinda shocking to me though. What about Koala Bears? Do you eat them too? I"m not being a smarty pants. I know different cultures have different foods they enjoy. It's just that I think of Kangaroos as having a pouch and being bouncity jouncity hopping around with their babies on board. The thought that they could become someone's dinner takes a little getting used to! :)
Koalas aren't in plague proprtions and I'm told (by native Australian aborigines) that they taste like eucalyptus oil - revolting. The kangaroo population sometimes has to be thinned out, they occasionally multiply to plague proportions and even when they're not, a mob can make a real mess of a farmer's cereal crops. So they shoot them. Should they collect the carcasses and have them butchered, or leave them to rot? Incidentally I seem to recall that Bambi's mom became somebody's venison lunch - so we don't have a monopoly on hunting wildlife.
The movie I saw as I recall showed Bambi's mom dying (or presumed so) in a fire. Now I saw the film when I was 3 which is more than 7 decades ago so perhaps my memory of that is faulty. I did not know Kangaroos needed to be thinned out. Now I do. Whether the carcasses are consumed by humans or other animals or left to rot is not my call. Your government decides that not moi.
Thanks Karen. I was 3. I saw the movie once in Highland Park, Michigan where I was born. I remember a fire and Bambi being alone. I remember it as being very frightening and terrible and horrific and sad. Either way. Death by fire or death by gun by big white hunter. Wonder if big white hunter mounted Bambi's Mother's head on a wall in his trophy room? Why let braggings right go unbragged?
