Why is it that the "low" setting is the last setting on fans (most of the time)? Shouldn't it be the first setting?

This really bothers me.

It is a pisser, that one.  I agree.  I am staring at a fan that has that exact same instruction.  I think it is the Illuminati.  or Trump.

  • The fans has been manufactured in a mirror reality.

Logically that would be better- but electric motors tend to need a good jolt to get spinning, after that you can finetune the speed without having them stop.

  • I think vintage fans tend to have "LO" first. Vintage fans were better :P

  • It's already been said that electric motors need a good jolt to get started
and when a fan gets older and the mechanism starts to wear or get dirty,
it becomes harder to start it on "low speed."
Quicker just to start it on "high" and adjust it.

A slight addition to the "jolt" answer:

The motors used in fans start best under high impedance. If there is high friction in the bearings (dirt), going from off -> low may not be sufficient to start the fan. Putting high first ensures the motors have adequate voltage to start.

(Impedance---the effective resistance of an electric circuit or component to alternating current, arising from the combined effects of ohmic resistance and reactance.)

Hey, no insulting the fugly baby!

Were you thanking me? Your post was an answer rather than a comment. My pea brain is confused.

I insult babies all the time.  Great thing is, they don't know what I'm saying.
I was thanking Mr. Bromide.  Your response suggests that you didn't understand what I was saying, so I elaborated further.
I will never believe your brain is pea sized or confused.  But, it would behoove you to take a break from dropping acid from time to time.
