As to the nuke scenario it depends on the nuke though. There's all kinds. Some are designed to destroy a lot of property (and those in and around the property in question). Others are designed to kill the animal life, and to keep killing the animal life over a wide area but do little property damage. But look at past atmospheric tests and nuclear accidents (like Chernobyl) to get an idea as to how devastating. Also grab a book called To Hell and Back: The Last Train From Hiroshima to get a better idea. It tracks survivors from both Hiroshima and Nagasaki among other aspects of the "bursting" of those two bombs.
Don't think it works like that.. if you get in the area that's nuked you are probably gonna die, immediately or sooner or later.. And that holds true whether you are 2, 20, 40 or even 80.
