    The origin of the phrase is the play "Hamlet" by Shakespeare:

    The lady doth protest too much, methinks

    That give the original phrase a female target, but since the mental mechanism is equally applicable to men, the phrase is often used with a male target today.

    But the phrase is not really about protesting, that is the new modern meaning of the word. It is about making promises "if you die I shall NEVER remarry" she say, but that is easier said than done. The bed gets cold and lonely at night, and in the end she remarries anyway.
