    Same here. In fact, this time of year is when we get all of our thunderstorms, especially around mid afternoon, so i doubt we will be seeing it either. ;0

    Zack and E99 are both correct, sort of. 8km/sec gets you into orbit, 11.2km/sec escapes completely. That's in the absence of air, or course, so add whatever velocity required to traverse the remaining atmosphere, else you'll slow down and fall back. Otherwise you'd have to run vertically - tough to do.
