The President of the United States only has the power to pardon Federal crimes, not State or local crimes. Pardons for State and local crimes can only be issued by the governor of the particular State in accordance with the State's constitutional laws. So given that, Mr. Arpaio's conviction must have been at the Federal level and not at the State or local level.

So if you're concerned about the Federal government's overshadowing States' Rights your answer may lie in the Federal government's actions that lead up to Mr. Arpaio's Federal conviction in the first place.

Of course, CNN reporting it doesn't make it so. This post was edited by Thriftymaid at August 26, 2017 8:29 PM MDT

The point that I'm making is that in order for the President to get involved the transgression would have to already be at the Federal level, not a "local" issue. A State or local conviction would be outside the President's power to pardon (check the source of the President's power, the US Constitution). If the President has the power to actually issue a pardon in the Arpaio case then the Federal government is already involved at the "local" level. And that involvement started long before Mr. Trump placed his hand on the bible last January 20th.

Multiple media sources have announced the pardon, by the way. Whether that's from different independent, credible sources (like it is supposed to be) or from the media's echo chamber is hard to say at this point. (But I haven't been following the story very closely.)

I find everything this president does disturbing.  However, Arpaio's convictions were at the federal level:

"... U.S. District Court Judge G. Murray Snow issued a temporary injunction, followed by a permanent court order in 2013, requiring Arpaio to stop detaining people without reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing other than their perceived immigration status.

Last month, another federal court judge ruled that Arpaio had “willfully violated” Snow’s order, finding him in criminal contempt of court. ... facing a maximum sentence of six months in jail plus a fine when he received his presidential pardon Friday.

Fox news did in fact report on it. As they are a reliable news source. If you would like to varify the reporting this is the link:

You very conveniently forgot to note that at least half of those pardons and commutations were for crimes other than drug-related - everything from having an illegal alligator to lying to the IRS.  Of course, that wouldn't serve to prop up your argument that Obama let out only drug dealers, thieves and gang members. Whomever told you that is either a liar or a ignorant of the facts.

Obama issued 1927 pardons and commutations here is a break down of the most common offenses:
    Drugs crimes: 1813
    Thieft: 24
    Firearms (only): 10
    Murder: 1
    Manslaughter: 1
Fraud (Bank, Mail, Tax, Money Laundering): 54

Many of the drug offenders also had firearms and other charges. NONE are counted twice.

Perhaps you only looked at the most recent pardons.  There was a second set.

    Perhaps she doesn't look period.

She is defense counsel for Donald Trump.  A lonely little petunia in an onion patch.

Follow the more detailed link above it takes you straight there. There are over 1700 listed and less than 30 are for something other than drugs.

I'm not going to waste my time looking at things that are long past and cannot be changed.  Simply because a prior president did or didn't do something doesn't make what Trump pardoning Arpaio right.  Trump has had plenty to complain about relating to Obama and what he did, but when Trump does the exact same thing, it's ok.  I call that hypocrisy.

I have not defended Trump pardon of the sheriff. Pointing out the hypocrisy  of the left....over 1 pardon of a contemp of court vs over 1800 drug offenders.
I would not have pardoned him.

You're talking about the record of a president 8 years in office versus a "president" less than 8 months in office.  I'd be willing to bet that by the time Mueller gets finished with his investigation, your president will be doing a lot more pardoning.

We will have to wait and see....but I do know that Obama granted more than any other President since Truman who issued blanket ones pertaining to the military..
