Some folks refer to Trump as a New York Democrat who just pretends to be a Republican. I don't see it. Why do they think that?

  • Stupid is as stupid does. He has a long history of being nothing more than eastern liberal establishment. The opening line in this answer refers to not only Trump, but those that couldn't figure out his origins and the company he kept over the years. The pack you run with determines who and what you are.

Understanding that statement requires a basic lesson in New York politics, especially New York City, where even our last Republican mayor, Mike Bloomberg, was actually a Democrat who switched his party affiliation because it made it easier to get elected:

The Democratic party holds the majority of public offices. Sixty-eight percent of registered voters in the city are Democrats. There are pockets of Republican strength in Staten Island, and wealthier sections of Brooklyn and Queens.

In many local/city races, such as those for Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate, and the 5 Borough Presidents, the election is decided in the Democratic primary as the Republican party offers little or only token opposition to the Democratic nominee.

New York City has not been carried by a Republican in a statewide or presidential election since President Calvin Coolidge won the five boroughs in 1924. In the GOP landslide of 1980, Ronald Reagan ran third behind President Jimmy Carter and independent candidate John Anderson. This is in contrast to New York State as a whole, which is somewhat less liberal (though it has trended Democratic in most recent elections). In 2014, Democrats had a supermajority in the New York State assemblyby virtue of holding all but two city-based districts.

Historically, the city's Republican officeholders have been considerably to the left of their national counterparts (with the significant exception of Staten Island). Labor and education politics are important. Housing and economic development are the most controversial topics, such as seen in the long debate over the building of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. An ability to deal with the state government is also crucial, especially on matters of education funding.

New York City is home to 12 of the state's 27 congressional districts, all but one held by Democrats. The Democrats have been particularly dominant in the city's federal politics since the 1990s; even before then, Republicans only had a realistic chance at winning three of the city's districts. With former city councilman Michael McMahon's victory in the Staten Island-based 13th District (now the 11th District) — historically the most conservative district in the city — the Democrats took all of the city's congressional seats for the first time in 76 years. The status would be short lived, as Republican Michael Grimm would defeat McMahon 2 years later. Due almost entirely to the Democrats' near-total dominance at the local level, the Democrats have held a majority of the state's congressional seats since the late 1950s.

Republicans in New York are generally not "right-wingers" as most are, for example, pro-choice, and sometimes they even cross-endorse Democrats - I believe even Mr. Trump once supported Bill Clinton for president. So in answer to your question, that's actually a very plausible statement.

Thanks. NYC and, to some extent, the state, are strange political birds.

Trump is classical liberal not a conservative. He's a REAL liberal.

He's what the word liberal used to mean before the hard left subverted it.

Because once upon a time when it was convenient for him to display himself thusly, he lied about being one.

What goes around comes around. When it is convenient for him to be a Dem again he will deny ever having been a Republican.  SIGH. Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday.
