If you believe prisoners should be seperated by offense and more and more people are being arrested for circumstances surrounding not paying

student loans added to the fact the responsibility for college loans and debt is moving from the Department of Education to the Treasury Department do you think debtors prisons are coming back?

I'm sure Equifax will take care of the situation.

To be honest, when I read your question I thought of debtors prisons.. and my feeling on that is that it's illogical... and retrograde.. I never did think it made sense.. to deprive people of their liberty because they owe money seems illogical... they cannot earn money while in prison so what's the point of that.. much better to have them earning so they can pay it back .

As to student loans.. the situation here is that it's not considered a debt as such.. many people get them written off.. I know that's likely to be the case with me.. and I like to think that investing in the people and their ability to contribute to the economy and wellbeing of the country is more important to the govt than paying back loans.

I dont think people should go to prison unless they commit a violent crime. Non-violent offenders should pay hefty penalties depending on their crime, and/or do community service and probation. If they violate there community service or probation, then they can go to jail, but in the mean time, let the prisons leave enough room to house the violent nasty people that commit dangerous crimes.

Then again, i dont know enough about what im talking about to answer this question properly. Maybe im wrong, but for what i do know, my answer still stands. ;)

Yes, I think they should be separated by offense.
But no one should be in jail because of debt.

This is one of the few occasions that I find myself in agreement with you. I think it worthwhile to also point out that with privately run prison services, the only way for them to show a profit is to have them run at capacity and with what seems to be the inevitable legalization of certain 'soft' drugs there will be a large vacuum that must be filled, leaving debtors an easy target to fill the vacuum.

  • Inmates should absolutely be separated by their crimes. Petty thieves, identity thieves, drug users, and people who haven't paid taxes shouldn't be mixed with murderers, gang members, rapists, etc.
