i.e. If we're selecting someone based on biological impulses, and we're doing so at a time in which we could create offspring, we go for someone with a very different genetic makeup than us. This behavior helps ensure the survival of the species because the gene pool remains diverse. So, we'd be more attracted to someone who is made differently.
Yet, genetics determines a lot about us, from the types of food we like to our intelligence.
Taking this a step further, we're in a culture that still appreciates long-term pairings, which requires compatibility, and it's tough to be really compatible with someone who has very different traits and behaviors from you.
So, when we choose partners, are we really choosing between finding someone we find super attractive and someone we're compatible with? Or, can you be wildly attracted to someone and still be genuinely compatible with them?
