If the authorities don't want the truth told, you better have a damn good lawyer.

A lawyer will keep you from saying something innocent that can be twisted against you.

No one in their right mind goes into a courtroom innocent or guilty when accused, and tries to defend themselves.

What do you think you are going to do.  OH YOUR HONOR, I AM INNOCENT.

Okay, says the judge, I believe you?

    Right.

Ever hear of the Salem Witch Trials?

    Or maybe the McCarthy Hearings?

Yes, the prosecution are not always fair, but you still have to prove that a lawyer would prevail against them.

The point is there is an unwritten code. They see you with no attorney, they eat you alive.  They have all the pieces of power in this game.  You have zilch.  Get the best lawyer you can find.  Unless it is a traffic offense or some such.

But a person who represents himself has better odds of winning Publisher's Clearing House that making any headway in the Court system in Arizona at least.

Even if a lawyer couldn't win ... they know many ways to delay the proceedings.

There is that too.  Sometimes that helps.

But more importantly, they KNOW the law and what your options are.  They are trying to be on your side because you are paying them.  That is not always the case.  Like mechanics, it is better to know someone than just trust any lawyer to have your best interests.

The government has untold resources to get a conviction....that is their goal...a conviction.   That is why our Constitution makes it a right to have legal counsel when charged with a crime.    It's just not smart to try to fight a criminal charge without a lawyer, guilty or not.   Many criminal defense lawyers don't even want to know if their client is guilty.  They just concentrate on reasonable doubt.

Even a well known and well respected surgeon would elect not to take out his own appendix---he knows another surgeon will be better able than he is to evaluate and deal with what they find and how to avoid the risk of complications before, during, and after the appendectomy.

Lawyers can help you avoid potential problems.  You don't when answering a truthfully might actually give the authorities probably cause to think you complicit in a crime. (Even admitting you were a witness also places you at the scene of the crime and might make you a potential suspect.)

But here a web site with some specific reasons...

More than once when I was in school I heard:  A lawyer who represents himself in court has a fool for a client!

Thank you for your very thoughtful and helpful reply tom and the link you provided. As you can see by some of the other posts, yours stands out above the crowd of typicality. I appreciate that. Happy First Day of Autumn Friday in the USA m'dear!  I do think the analogy is a bit of stretch though. It's okay. You used it for dramatic effect and yes it got my attention! :)
