It's my favorite song of his too Quimby. I love Allentown as well. But, there are other songs of his that I find just as enjoyable as Allentown. The Stranger album, 52nd Street, and Turnstiles all had a number of great songs. Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, Only The Good Die Young, The Stranger, Movin' Out, James (I love that song), Rosalinda's Eyes, New York State of Mind, Angry Young Man, Honesty.
Yeah, those songs you've mentioned, Harry -- songs I've heard only a few times -- are indeed quite good. I guess I should have stated in my question that I was talking about his major hits. (As far as I know, some of the songs you've mentioned were not huge hits. I could be wrong, though - - I' m not a huge Joel fan.) :) Though I respect his talent immensely.
I concede I don't know Joel well enough to have asked this question.
I was thinking of his major hits, I guess -- and I admit that I'm not a huge Joel fan, but i like him a lot. Just unfamiliar with all of his stuff I guess. These songs so far are really good and I've not heard them. I'll now go delete my question .. . .
Don't delete the question Welby. It's a good one. Honestly, it's all a matter of personal taste. There aren't any wrong answers IMHO. Keeping this question up actually allows you to learn about his other songs that you weren't aware of and weren't as popular.
Yes, no doubt. I had no idea he had such better-to-me songs than songs like "Uptown Girl." These songs on this thread are all better than most of his hits to me. Why these songs aren't played on the radio baffles me. I won't delete the question, even though it now strikes me as uninformed.
You're right. It's just these songs posted here are SO much better to me than songs like "Uptown Girl." Geez -- there's simply no comparison. I won't delete the question.
WELBY! Don't delete! No one is arguing with you on your picks honey. You are learning about us and what we like and, learning about some of his other songs that might not have been popular in the UK. You might find some new music to listen to! :-)
Based just upon these songs people are posting, I realize I don't know Joel too well. These posted songs here are, to me, WAY better than most of his big hits that I hear on the radio. :)
I'm a long time fan. I once got a good laugh when he told, in an interview, that his father didn't want him to do music, he wanted him to go to college. Joel said he agreed to go to Columbia, which he did....just not the university. I don't know if that's true but I liked it and never forgot it. :)
And it's sometimes a good thing to rethink my thoughts -- in this case, what I thought about Joel is not true. (and even though I sort of trashed his big hits here in the thread, a "Joel Big hit" is better than a LOT of songs out there. :)
