The dark web is the World Wide Web content that exists on darknets, overlay networks which use the Internet but require specific software, configurations or authorization to access.

I've known all about it for years now. I just don't really have a use for it.

That it is the latest thing to talk about.

All it is is addresses that you have to know before you can get on there.

    Not advertised anywhere.

This article is about darknet websites. For the part of the Internet not accessible by traditional web search engines, see deep web.

The dark web is the World Wide Web content that exists on darknets, overlay networks which use the Internet but require specific software, configurations or authorization to access.[1][2] The dark web forms a small part of the deep web, the part of the Web not indexed by search engines, although sometimes the term deep web is mistakenly used to refer specifically to the dark web.[3][4][5][6][7]

The darknets which constitute the dark web include small, friend-to-friend peer-to-peer networks, as well as large, popular networks like Tor, Freenet, and I2P, operated by public organizations and individuals. Users of the dark web refer to the regular web as Clearnet due to its unencrypted nature.[8] The Tor dark web may be referred to as onionland,[9] a reference to the network's top level domain suffix .onion and the traffic anonymization technique of onion routing. The dark contains one of three things drugs, pornography of the vilest kind and contract killers. The computers on the dark web can never be found by googling. The web as we know it is the tip of the iceberg. All other parts constitute the dark web.

  • Technically speaking there is no such thing as the dark web.   There is the deep web which is all interent content that cannot be catalogued.  It's all that's behind the scenes be it the info that is our profiles and data on these sites to .onion sites and so much other uninteresting and some small part interesting crap.   Dark web is a buzzword created to sensationalize the nefarious, dark, and criminal content that exist as a fraction of deepweb content.
