Wondering where you live. The French have the Alliance Francaise. It includes a very thorough multi level program that covers reading, writing and speaking, with programs specially written to assist with listening and pronunciation. I'm not sure, but I think many countries would now have similar specialised programs. There are free online programs for Gulf (present day) and classical Arabic.
A lot depends on what you want to do with your languages. Is it for work? to travel? to be able to communicate with more people locally? to translate literature from other cultures?...
If dialects of Chinese are the most useful to you, probably best to find the resources to help you overcome the obstacles. All dialects are bound to be available somewhere. Cantonese resources should be especially easy to find because it's the most commonly spoken in South-East Asia.
Please dont select a language by going alphbetical. Just dont do it. Do it the other way around. Start with Zulu and Zuni. You will be one of the few. And I hope Im not getting too alphabetical when I say whether you live in Africa or America or near A really good language school, you should be able to find someone to practice with. Thats the important thing - find someone else to share the pain with.
