Reek so BAD of coffee. There is no noun before the verb.

I don't know where you got that idea, but it's absolutely incorrect.  Nice try, though.

An adjective describes a noun or pronoun: "That boy is so bad"

An adverb describes a verb or anything apart from a noun and pronoun: "That boy speaks badly!"

Adverbs are used to answer how questions e.g. "How does he talk? - He talks loudly."

Flowers smell sweet or flowers smell sweetly, which is correct? Smell sweet is correct because we it describes the smell of flowers. Smell sweetly tells how a rose smells i.e. flowers do not have noses so they cannot smell!!

"Fresh bread smells great(adjective) - I am describinng my opinion on fresh bread

"I smell terribly because I have a cold" (adverb) - I am not able to use my nose to smell things because of my cold.

In the sentence that I wrote, to use the word "bad" without modifying it would be incorrect.

No, that is not a deciding factor in the use of the word. You do understand that "reek" is the verb being modified, right?  To say, "Why does this place reek so bad" is improper grammar. It has to be 'badly'.

It only sounds better to those who don't know or don't appreciate correct English grammar. To me, it sounds horrible.

Umm, we have a TOS violation!

    5. Lastly, you can’t say anything bad about coffee. That’s just not cool.

I'm reporting you!  However, maybe we can work something out before I hit that report button.    Deal?

Perhaps there is some confusion between coffee and Covfefe? This post was edited by DCLXVI at November 10, 2017 2:03 PM MST

NOW you tell me, after I've been banned from the country club and carted off to the "re-education" camp.  Thanks, friend.
