At conception everything we will ever be or never be is there. Unless something is damaged. The genius and the mediocre are there. Right?

The builder/destroyer are there. The kind/cruel are there. Unless you think everything is nurture. Do you?

  • Well I think it's both.
We are all born with potential, maybe some more than others in different ways, but the environment that we are born into really plays a big part in determining whether or not we can realize our potential.
    For example...
Some of the richest, most powerful people truly believe that they have had financial success because they are better than other people, but the truth is if Donald Trump or someone like that had been born into poverty he could just as easily be living on the streets right now.

We are born with all kinds of potential, but our home lives, upbringing and environment play an enormous role in determining our lives.

Thank you for a thoughtful answer Truthseeker. Do you think there is such a thing as LUCK? Are some folks "lucky" and some folks not? Happy Thursday to you m'dear! :)

  • The confusing thing is that I believe in many different things.
I do believe in luck or chance because I didn't deserve to be born in a wealthy country any more than a baby born in a third world country.
    I was lucky or fortunate.
I also believe people adapt to whatever their limitations are and can become successful out of dire situations.
Those people are beating the odds.
Trump bragging about his fortune and how great he is doesn't impress me as much as a person born into poverty who has managed to get off the streets and stay drug free and provide a home for their children.
Those people have overcome greater odds in my opinion.
Where it gets confusing is that sometimes I think there maybe a plan for some people.
Life just has a very funny way of working out and there are moments that I feel like some things were just mean to happen.
    It's hard to understand.

I take exception to one thing you said m'dear which is "...I didn't deserve to be born in a wealthy country..." There is no "deserve" here. You did nothing. You didn't exist and then because of your parents' coupling you came into existence. You have heard of reincarnation I trust? Some believe that we keep coming back until we have learned all the lessons we need to learn and then we have been perfected and don't have to come back again In that philosophy being born is penance for what you did in prior lives. For example if you were a very cruel person in one life you will come back in another life and see what it is like to be treated cruelly. Whatever you do in life you will experience in the next..whether good or bad. If you were very kind then you will be treated with kindness. You have no say in the matter. It isn't something you can refuse or request. It just is. I rather like that  belief because it kinda levels the playing field. It puts the shoe on the other foot. I would like  to think the obscenely wealthy folks in this life who find the poor folks tiresome and don't  give a rat's a** about them will be poor in the next life and be on the receiving end of what they dished out in their prior life. It comforts me. Does it exist? No one knows. But it's what I would like to think happens. Thank you for your reply Truthseeker and Happy Friday! :))

What a skewed foundation, on several counts. First of all, if it's something that we'll "never be", then it wouldn't exist at all, so how could it be there
Secondly, certain aspects of a person are acquired after being conceived, after being born, or at various other time periods throughout one's life. Those aspects include both tangible and intangible things, such as attributes, traits, characteristics, abilities, limitations, etc.  As such, it is inaccurate to state that "everything we will be is there".

Back to the drawing board, that's what's needed here.

Many things are there - but not everything.  Anyway its what we do with them and what we add to them that makes the difference.
