I once stumbled on a website that opened popup window after popup-window until it had consumed my entire stack and  cache. I don't know if the site was deliberately hostile to visitors or if it was a programming error, but I learned how to close the browser despite all CPU resources being busily used ;-))

Gosh yes!  I click on one back in 2009 and it took me to Answerbag......................and look, here I am in 2017 still playing with many of the same great folks.  What a disaster....

Porn sites used to place cleverly misleading ads on sites. You knew instantly when you had found one because one site would automatically load another, and you might have dozens of windows open in your browser. Even if that didn't go on forever, closing one window automatically opened another for a different site, so it was a test of your technical skill to regain control of your machine.
