I think I was about 12 yo and I was doing my six mile hike to earn Boy Scout Second Class. One requirement was to cook a meal. The two guys walking with me refused to help build a fire, so I refused to share my food with them, so the scout master refused to give me credit for the hike, so I stopped going to meetings.
I was walking up 42 steps to our rented house in the mountains near Otavlao, Ecuador. My back pack had this laptop in it, some clean socks and underwear. I was also hauling a 50 lb. suitcase up those steps.
We liked hiking and often did five(ish) mile treks in the state parks around my hometown. After the first baby we bought a back baby carrier which was great. We used it for both girls. That way they don't slow you down so much until they are too big for it. Then they hike with you, a mile a best. :)
