Over-analyzing anything or a person's response can drive you into the Looney-Bin.  How you perceive it and how it was delivered may be two different things.  The best thing to do is to ask.
If you try to make a pun, make sure you deliver it in a way it will be received accordingly.  If you are not sure, ask.
