You can learn how to handle a gun properly. Can you learn how to handle being under pressure appropriately?

Scot Peterson, an armed school deputy, rushed to the Florida school where the crazed shooter was killing kids and just sat outside the building for 4 minutes. He never went inside. He is being investigated for it. He resigned. Donjohn says Peterson either didn't learn how to react under pressure or is a coward.  What do you think happened ?

A wile back sceintist found a gene that they called the Hero gene and they found that in some people that gene is turned on and in some people that gene is turned off. people that have the gene turned on tend to act heroic when the need arises and people that have the gene turned off don't. So I figure no amount of training will guarenty that a person will be a hero if they don't have the hero gene turned on. They can test to find who has an active hero gene so maybe they should and only hire people that have it to protect kids. Cheers!

Boy Nanoose you sure know some nifty things! Thank you for sharing that info with us. A HERO gene. If they could test to see whether it is turned "ON" or off that would definitely help prevent the  Scott Petersons in the world from getting jobs that required it to be active. So how on earth do they test it? You know what my friend I'm gonna Google "Hero Gene" and find out. I appreciate your answering this question because what the guy did made no sense to me because he was in a job that REQUIRES him to engage and protect. I wonder why he would have ever wanted that kind of job? Oh. I'm gonna  the next question I ask to you when I ask a question about it Nanoose. I'm pretty sure you won't mind. If you do tell me. Happy Saturday! :)

There are different kinds of heroism.....would you give bone marrow to a stranger knowing that it will mess your own life up for a few years... There are people that let the medical profession test new untried drugs on them....are they not Heroes  to ? They could be saving the lives of millions.....

Peoples  brains add wired different......we are not all alike .....:(

Yes, there are specific training programs to teach you not only how to handle your firearm but how to do it under extreme situations. How to handle stress and how to shoot from strange positions etc.

Just found out it is worse than that. There were 4 total deputies who did not go in during the shooting. This is very disheartening. They were hiding by their cars. So many people in just failed to do their jobs. The FBI, the Family services, the sheriff department.... This post was edited by my2cents at February 24, 2018 5:07 AM MST

I find it unusual that five deputies failed to do anything but hide, not just one.  Having said that, I don't think there is any way to know how someone will react in the face of an active shooter with a semi-automatic weapon.  Unless you've been in a real, combat-type situation where you have been tested, nature's "fight or flight" mechanism will come into play.  The events at this school are not like you see on TV where the team almost always knows where each person is located, where the shooter is, and where you know the team will come out of it unharmed.  This is real life shooting.  I'm curious to know why there was a 20 minute lag between what the surveillance cameras captured and when the information was passed to the police.  The delay meant that police were actually reacting to old footage.  Not helpful.

My son worked for a security Co. That was gun trained.
Two of them were shot and killed during a robbery even though they were trained to use those guns. But they were not trained to kill with them.
My son quit soon after that happened.
