I'm guessing you mean other than hunting.

I have had to use a firearm to defend myself a couple times.

The most memorable was walking a trail at a large campground/state park ... coming around a blind corner ... and startled a bull elk grazing right next to the path.  I backed around the corner, but he came onto the trail ... saw me ... lowered his antlers and stomped, preparing to charge.  So I drew and fired in the air.  (I knew I wouldn't kill him with a handgun.  Just make him mad.)  He paused long enough that I was able to retreat around another corner.  Luckily, I guess he decided to go back to his meal.

    You were in his territory.

You're lucky you are here to write about it.

I would have assumed one could not carry a firearm in a state or national park.

In Oregon, one can carry just about everywhere if you have a "concealed carry permit" (which I did at the time).
Only the state legislature can say where you can't carry on government property, and (at the time) the only places off limits were courthouses and the capitol buildings.

There are more off limits places in some states.   In my state, even if businesses have signs that say "no guns are allowed on these premises," you don't have to leave your gun outside if you are licensed to carry concealed.  If they realize you have it and ask you to leave or take it to your car, you must do so. • I was shot in the eye with a BB gun and couldn't see for a week.  I'm fortunate I didn't lose my eye.

My husband caught a guy trying to break into his van downtown one day and chased him several blocks and held him at gunpoint until the cops arrived.  This post was edited by Thriftymaid at March 14, 2018 8:45 PM MDT

There are a few similar stories.  This is the one that made the evening news; we never let up about it.

I had an angry farmer chase me down the road with a .22 rifle. He didn't shoot me and apoligized  the next day.  An armed robber ran right past me in the dark one night. He tossed his gun in the bushes because about 10 cops were right behind him. (he got 20 years)
