I tend to be much less black and white, but we were having a discussion about a 16 year old girl who wanted to go to an after-party following a prom, in a field until 4 am. All the mums present said, hmm not sure about that, sounds a bit dodgy, make sure you check it out properly. We all agreed we would probably hide behind a hedge watching to make sure our daughter was ok. There was a non-mum present and she explained things from the teenager's perspective - when you are young you want to have fun, if everyone else is going then they would feel ashamed if their parents were the only ones saying no...
I think, therefore, that perhaps a difference is... having raised an offspring, nurtured it carefully for many years, made sure it didn't get run over by a bus, or fall off a cliff, then we naturally want to keep it safe.
