Kind of like there is no Lewisville, KY.................it's pronounced Loo-a-vul.  When I hear someone pronounce it Lewis-ville, I have to correct them because they obviously have only seen the city on a map.

Yep, named for King Louis who pronounced his name Looey and for reasons only the natives understand, it is now pronounced Loo-a.  Yet, I do sometimes hear people say Loo-y-ville.

  • Me for instance ... being as I don't live there.  I do know about the local pronunciation, but I'm a Yankee.  :))

Which King Louis?  I looked them up and there are fifteen that I found. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at April 28, 2018 1:01 PM MDT

France.  I believe he sent us help in the Revolutionary War but it's been many years since I've read about this.   I think I'm right though.

I had to share this with you.  This King Louis XVI of France was convicted of treason and executed.  This is very funny to me.  This article does him justice.

I live in Florida now and I'm the only Southerner in my community of townhouses.....everyone else is Northeast and Midwest so when I say my yankee neighbor did so and so, no one knows who I'm talking about.

Well, first, you don't "correct" somebody who pronounces a word as if they had only read it someplace. That means they read a lot.

And second, everybody I have met who spoke that name pronounced it "Luvvel".

I correct them because it is the kind thing to do.  I read a lot but don't want to mispronounce the name of the city.  I experienced this when I moved to Spokane.  I pronounced it Spo-cain but it should be pronounced Spo-can.   The interesting thing about that one is that the Indian word doesn't have an e (Spokan) but the city decided to add the e but complains that people pronounce it like it's spelled.

You must have been talking to some Appalachian mountain folk.  Down in the city it's Loo-a-vul.

The name of a city is exactly whatever the residents call it. I went to college there for years and everybody called it "San Lewis Obispo".

I've only heard it pronounced San Looy Obispo or San Louise Obispo.  It seems a really strange name for a city but, there's a story. This post was edited by Thriftymaid at April 29, 2018 2:08 AM MDT

  • That's how everyone pronounces it, yes. No one spells it that way, though!

Correction: not everyone, mi amigo. The ol' Randmeister D gives it the Spanish pronunciation.

  • Correct. It's spelled San Luis Obispo and it's pronounced /sæn 'luːɪs ə'bɪs.poʊ/

There's no California place name that I can't spell or pronounce, from Jamacha to Hueneme.
