It was later. When I was young and just married, my father in law grew his own veg and always had loads to spare.. and back then I was very into freezing everything and making the most of everything... so I experimented with a lot of things freezing wise..

My first memory of it was when I was younger than ten years old, my mother   mentioned it and then explained after seeing the quizzical look on my face.

Only after I grew up and had to make a frost free or not decision.  I had no reason prior to that to know that frost-free freezers burn up meat much much faster than manual defrost freezers.  That is why I keep veggies in my kitchen freezer and meat in the manual-defrost freezer upstairs. Way later, not until after I died.

I've always known and I've always not cared.

Most of my life though have never experienced it first-hand.  At least was not aware if I have.
