I don't know if it's legal, but I do know that your lawyer has been picking up the check.
Legal or not, it's totally unethical. I would definitely worry about a conflict of interest. Now, if they dated in the past, that might be another issue altogether.

That's because your lawyer is a solicitor. That's an English lady lawyer without her briefs.
