What's the deal with chewing tobacco? Are there a lot of secret tobacco-chewers?

I now know two people who have told me they chew tobacco and I never would have guessed. Neither of them fits my image of the typical tobacco-chewer. Do you chew or know people who do?

I know some young guys who chew tobacco.  It's big with the college guys.  And the college girls are smoking cigarettes more than the past few years too.

Chewing tobacco is mainly for work outdoors where keeping tobacco lit can be a problem due to wind, rain or seaspray.
So my 'typical tobacco chewer' looks like Popeye or maybe this lady:

Dipping was a trend in the Navy back when you could also drink and drive.

I don't use any tobacco products. I remember when I was delivering newspapers at about age 12 or 13 and found out that several of the other guys chewed tobacco. One of them offered it to me, I declined, and I asked him what he liked about it. He said it began as a monkey-see, monkey-do thing for him when he started playing Little League Baseball at age 9.
When I was in the military, it was the rage among some of my fellow Marines and sailors. I've always considered it a filthy and disgusting habit, not to mention the detriment it is to one's health.
