co·los·to·my noun a surgical operation in which a piece of the colon is diverted to an artificial opening in the abdominal wall so as to bypass a damaged part of the colon.
Did you mean some other word?

It sounds like you're having a colonoscopy done, not a colostomy. They will look to see if there are any polyps and if there are, they will remove them and do a biopsy to see of they are malignant. Many times, they are not cancerous, but your doctor is the one who should be consulted on this, not the Internet.
