In TV shows and in the movies, police sometimes tell suspects and/or potential suspects not to leave town in case they're needed for further

questioning or in furtherance of the investigation. 

  Does that actually happen in real-life criminal cases?

    Yes. Especially if youre out on bond. I dont think they say that if you dont have a bond.
