It would depend on how much of a hurry I am in. I have been tempted to pay for their whole purchase when someone is searching for the right credit card and I want to get the line moving.
What I find most irritating is the person (usually a woman) who doesn't open her purse to pay until everything is rung up and in bags. Then, she spends five minutes (while everyone on line behind her is fuming) looking for a penny. Do these people think that if they wait to pay until everything is bagged the cashier will just say, "Go on, no point holding up the line any longer."?
I guess it depends on what they're buying as someone else said. If it's beer or cigarettes or the person just has a gross attitude, I won't pitch in. But I would a few dollars if I have them or if their order isn't all that costly, I would ask to add it to my order and I'll just pay for both.
The most I have done is $20. It was for his water bill. I was in line next to him and overheard him explaining he thought the bill was $13 but there was a back bill he did not know about. They were working with him to keep it on. After the secratary walked back for paperwork I put a $20 bill on the counter and said "Jesus Loves You". His jaw dropped and he said Thank you. And then paid his entire bill. He insisted on giving me a hug on the way out...
In a grocery store I have gave a couple dollars before. Again like others have said depends on the purchase....no cigs or beer etc.
